One of the hot topics discussed at Session 1- “Advertising 101″ of the Center For Excellence in Advertising at Howard University’s Making a Lateral Move into Advertising (MLMA) Pilot Program was whether or not Social Media is a Fad. After viewing a video that highlighted predictions and trends on power and influence of social media, the opinions in the room were split and each side was holding strong to their point of view. The video link was sent to a “Social Media Expert” and this what they had to say:
“I was so hoping the video would prove that social media IS indeed a fad. But alas.
Anyway – worth watching because I’ve heard these “stats” bandied around at several client meetings already. People seem to like them even though they really are not accurate. Saying “If Facebook was a country, it would be the 4th largest” is like saying “If ordering a slice of pizza was voting, it would overtake going to the polls as the largest civic activity” or “If the toilet was a theater seat, going to the bathroom would be the most sold out show in the history of the world…” etc.
ALSO – I would love to finally dispense with this notion I keep hearing that YouTube is the second largest search engine on the web. It is not, because it is not a search engine. People do not go on there to find out the same things they do from a search engine and it is a poor analogy. Just because it has a search box on it doesn’t make it a search engine. (Just as iTunes is not, Outlook is not, Facebook is not, etc….)”
